Abstract

Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) is the commonest form of joint disease and, along with soft-tissue rheumatism, accounts for the majority of patients with ‘rheumatism’ appearing at the surgery. It is therefore very important to know about this condition — often untaught (or only touched on) in medical school. Owing to recent knowledge of the aetiology and pathogenesis the rationale of treatment of osteoarthritis is steadily improving.
