Abstract
It is a pleasure to welcome so many of you to this International Symposium on the Thermal Storage of Solar Energy. A special word of welcome is extended to the representatives of the three co-sponsors viz.

the Commission of the European Communities,

the Dutch Section of the International Solar Energy Society, and
-
-
the Royal Institution of Engineers in The Netherlands, as well as to the speakers from various countries, especially those who have come from very far to join us here in Amsterdam. I think that it is only fitting that the organizers of a symposium on Solar Energy Storage, a field that is in a very rapid and perhaps turbulent development, have chosen this ancient city as a meeting place, a city where developments are equally turbulent — if not hectic.
