Abstract

When a molecule is ionized in the gas phase it can undergo unimolecular dissociations or ion-molecule reactions. A molecular ion in a high degree of internal excitation can undergo dissociation within picoseconds. Ion-molecule reactions belong to the fastest bimolecular processes in the gas phase. We shall discuss some aspects of both types of these processes stressing, where possible, the similarities and differences between ionic and neutral systems.
