Abstract

Already before the war, the students under Peano’s direction were mostly women and this remained so after the war ended and the soldiers returned. This was no doubt explained in great part by Peano’s involvment with Mathesis and the Mathematical Conferences, where the majority of teachers attending were women. Many of the papers presented by Peano to the Academy of Sciences were by women, although in the academic year 1918–19 these included also notes written by soldiers still in service.
