Summary

This project tests an alcaline electrolyser concept under pressure using the thermal activation at 200°C and available materials, i.e. uncatalised electrodes and metallic diaphragms made of porous nickel.

The entire program is not yet accomplished, long term testing and the prototyp construction were considerably delayed due to corrosion, construction and delivery problems.

Optimation at a scale of 100 cm cell surface succeeded in simple cell design and good performance: 1.69 V at 10 kA/m2 (1.85 V at 15 kA/m2), 200°C, 30 bar, 35% KOH. Further improvement with up-scalable cell design is not expected. Stability of constitutive cell materials has been checked for more than 1000 hours. Anodic corrosion of porous nickel may occur. Long term testing continues.

A 120 kW prototyp installation (14 cells of 0.25 m2 unit cell surface) has been designed an constructed. First tests are currently performed.

Preliminary design of an industrial plant of appr.500 MW and cost analysis is currently curried out.
