Abstract
Although a naive feeling of a privileged direction of time has always been present in human thought (Fugit irreparabile tempus, Humpty Dumpty etc.), the scientific concept of irreversibility is relatively modern (19th century).
(This paper is derived from two of Rosenfeld’s papers which substantially borrowed from each other: ‘General Introduction to Irreversibility’ (I972d) and ‘Statistical Causality in Atomic Theory’ (1974a). The latter was contributed to a 1971 symposium in honor of S. Sambursky.)
