Abstract

The study of education differs from most academic disciplines in that its subject is a major economic sector; the United States alone currently spends over $120 thousand million per year on education. The criteria for considering Suppes’ contributions to education must thus go beyond those employed in the chapters of this volume that deal with his contributions to philosophy and psychology. For Suppes has not only contributed through academic research to our thinking about education, but he has also pioneered the introduction of new techniques for instruction, particularly techniques involving computers. Indeed Suppes’ practical work in education will, I expect, change the practice of education more profoundly than his research on education is likely to affect academic thinking. Thus the following pages will deal more with Suppes as a technocrat, manager, and entrepreneur than with Suppes as a scholar.
