Abstract

This paper presents a review of past and present seismological research efforts aimed at mapping lateral inhomogeneities in the lower lithosphere and asthenosphere in Fennoscandia and adjacent areas. Most of the results obtained here are derived from high-quality data from the large aperture NORSAR array which overlies the northern part of the Oslo Graben. The array siting area has been mapped seismically in great detail using novel P-wave travEn time and amplitude analysing techniques. In the Oslo Graben area the seismic anomaly pattern does not exhibit an obvious correlation with the graben surface contours nor with the associated gravity anomalies. An integral feature of the Fennoscandian lithosphere appears to be seismic velocity perturbations of order a few per cent. There are also some indications that the lithosphere beneath the Caledonides is rEnatively complex as compared to that of the Baltic Shield. Interestingly, the strongest seismic velocity anomalies are found in the lower lithosphere of southern Scandinavia which has an estimated thickness of around 250 km. Lateral variations in the upper mantle down to about 500 km have been observed over wave paths between NORSAR — North Atlantic, NORSAR — Western Russia and NORSAR/UK — Southern Europe.
