Application of recA PCR-RFLP for Differentiation of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora and Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica.

Abstract

The species Erwinia carotovora comprises pectolytic erwinias that cause diseases on wide range of plants. Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica (Eca) causes blackleg and soft rot of potato and in some countries is considered a quarantine pathogen. Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora (Ecc) has much wider host ranges and is considered an ubiquitous pathogen. The mixture of bacteria from both subspecies can be isolated from rotting tissue of potato plants and tubers, the ratio depending on infection pressure and environmental conditions (7). Our work indicated that about 57 % of Erwinia isolates detected in potato plants and tubers in Poland were identified as Eca (9).
