Abstract

The application of high hydrostatic pressure in the polymeric fullerenes causes a number of effects; the most interesting of them are the structural phase transformations and the pressure-induced polymerization processes. These effects can be studied by means of Raman scattering spectroscopy, an effective and powerful tool for studying physical and chemical properties of the fullerene family of materials. In particular, the behavior of the phonon modes of the tetragonal phase of the two-dimensionally polymerized C60 has been studied as a function of pressure, up to 27.5 GPa, at room temperature. Gradual transformation of the material to a new phase was observed in the pressure region 19.0-21.0 GPa. This transition is irreversible and the phonon spectrum of the high-pressure phase provides strong indication that the fullerene molecular cage is preserved in the recovered phase and therefore this phase may be related to a three-dimensional network of C60 cages.
