Abstract

Losses of crops arising from the effects of other living organisms are grouped into losses due to diseases, pests and weeds. Diseases and pests cause pre- and post-harvest losses, whereas weeds just cause pre-harvest losses. Losses due to all causes can amount to 40% or more of a crop, with pre-harvest losses due to disease usually being around 10–15% of a crop.
