The First Series of 17 Patients

  • Chapter
Dialysing for Life

Abstract

When the first artificial kidney was completed at the end of 1942 it was clear that the medical practitioners in and around Kampen would have to acquire sufficient confidence in this new development to refer kidney patients to Kolff — unless the kidney by chance became a reasonable option for a patient who had already been admitted to the Kampen hospital. It would not be easy to develop such a confidence without any experience with the treatment of patients. In fact it was a kind of chicken-and-egg problem.

  2. Kolff WJ, Berk HThJ, with the cooperation of Sister M. ter Welle, Miss A. J. W. van der Leij, E. C. van Dijk and J. van Noordwijk. The artificial kidney: a dialyser with a great area (In Dutch). Geneeskundige Gids 1943; 21 (number 21), 27 August. An abbreviated version was published under the same title and with the same authors and co-workers in the Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde in 1943; 87: 1684–1687. The same authors published an article in English under the title The artificial kidney: a dialyser with a great area’ in the Swedish journal Acta Medica Scandinavica, 1944; 117: 121–134. This contained a postscript dated 15 January 1944 with a summary of the results obtained with the second and third patients. The importance of this publication was mainly that it was also distributed in those countries that were not occupied by Germany, Italy or Japan. Finally a brief article by the same authors in French appeared in La Presse Médicale of 8 April 1944, pp. 103–110.
