On the Lack of Correlation Between ERG and EOG Alterations in Malignant Melanoma of Choroid

Abstract

Electrophysiological tests have not been considered of a relevant diagnostic value in malignant melanoma of choroid, because ERG and EOG alterations depend essentially on the retinal detachment caused often by the tumour.

Recently Bohár & Farkas (1973) reported their experience in 25 cases of intraocular tumour. They found that the tumour damages the electroretinogram and the electro-oculogram more than a recent retinal detachment of equal extent. If this is true, the electroretinogram and electro-oculogram could have a great diagnostic value in certain intricate diagnostic problems.

We had the opportunity to examine some patients affected by malignant melanoma of choroid and by metastatic tumour with or without retinal detachment and performed electrophysiological tests to verify the diagnostic value of ERG and EOG in tumour of choroid.

This investigation was supported by Grant No. 72.00851.04 of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.
