Summary

From the eastern mediterranean area including Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Israel and Sinai 123 species of Dytiscidae are recorded. At least 80 species are collected in Turkey, followed by the Greek mainland with 66, the Ionian islands with 49 and Crete with 36 species. The author tries to find out by which adjoining regions the different areas of the region are mainly influenced in regard to the Dytiscid fauna. On the Ionian islands a middle european influence is much more evident than on the Greek mainland or any other part of the eastern mediterranean area. Some Dytiscidae with mediterranean distribution have their eastern distribution border in Greece, on the Aegean islands or on Crete and do not occur in Turkey. In a further schedule the connections of the different parts of the eastern mediterranean area are shown referring to the distribution of the Dytiscidae. Hence follows that Crete has closer faunistical connections to the Greek mainland than to Turkey. The distribution of some Dytiscidae leads to the conclusion that the western Aegean islands faunistically belong to the Greek mainland while the eastern ones have close connections to Turkey.
