Observations in Interplanetary Space of Relativistic Electrons from Jupiter

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 52))

Abstract

The existence of energetic electron bursts in the interplanetary medium outside the bow shock of Earth (Fan et al., 1964; Frank and Van Allen, 1964; Anderson, 1968) led us to search for similar interplanetary electron bursts of Jovian origin as Pioneer 10 approached Jupiter. In this paper, we summarize evidence for the presence of Jovian electrons in interplanetary space as much as 1 AU inside the orbit of Jupiter. The observations and analysis have been discussed in much greater detail by Chenette et al. (1974).
