Flare Radiations Responsible for Ionospheric Effects

  • Chapter
Ionospheric Effects of Solar Flares

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 46))

Abstract

The major wavelength areas of interest to upper atmospheric physics are:

  1. (i)

The broad Schumann continuum from 1350–1750 Å, the far-ultraviolet responsible for the dissociation of O2.

  2. (ii)

The whole Spectrum from 1350–100 Å, which contributes to the ionization of the upper ionosphere. This region includes:

    1. (a)

Lα at 1216 Å responsible for the production of quiet day D-region,

    2. (b)

He I (584 Ã…) and He II (304 Ã…) lines, which are quite prominent, and contribute substantially to F-region ionization.

  3. (iii)

X-rays above 8 Ã…, contributing to the lower E region.

  4. (iv)

X-rays below 8 Ã…, negligible under quiet conditions, but the main source of flare time D-region ionization.
