Abstract

Deafness (congenital deafness) is defined here cybernetically, as a hearing loss such that the patient cannot hear his own voice and the other soundgiving effects of his own body without a hearing aid. Concerning the hearing of one’s own voice, the following curve of deafness has been described by Von Békésy(I): Hz. 125 250 500 1000 2000 4000 dB. 50 60 90 90 90 80 (LS.O.) This curve coincides with another definition of deafness: those children are called ‘deaf’ who will not, even with the best possible equipment and training, be able to understand speech mainly by hearing (2). This inadequate auditory perception of the sound-giving effects of their own body movements may cause some motor difficulties such as:

  1. 1.

    a shuffling gait with accompanying bad postures;

  2. 2.

    difficulties in blowing, including of the nose; i. e. in the control of breathing;

  3. 3.

    backwardness in developing speed of movements (3), which — apart from other causes such as overprotection and so on — may also be due to the longer reaction time to visual than to auditory stimuli (Brills, 1949, in Myklebust, 3).
