Abstract

The circulation of blood through the vascular system is maintained by the rhythmic contraction of the heart. This pumping action depends on the ability of its muscular fibres to develop force and to shorten. An important development in our understanding of cardiac physiology has been the consideration of the heart as a muscle in order to gain greater insight into the operation of the heart as a pump.
