Abstract

The Chinese novel and short story, the study of which was, till recently, some-what neglected, are now the subject of growing interest in both East and West. In China, there are being published in quick succession new reprints of old novels and the material necessary for their study. In the West, too, the number of studies dealing with this subject is also on the increase. We have already had the opportunity to become acquainted with Irwin’s1 study of the novel of adventure and with Crump’s work on the historical novel.2
