In his Journal for 1956 M. Julien Green wrote:
Un livre sur Bernières-Louvigny. Les austérités du XVIIe siècle, le pessimisme des meilleurs quant à leur propre salut. Si les justes ont tant de peine à eviter l’enfer, qu’en sera-t-il de nous?1
