Rectal Function in Patients with Idiopathic Chronic Constipation

  • Chapter
Gastrointestinal Motility

Abstract

Idiopathic chronic constipation is a common but poorly understood syndrome. It is thought that its causes are multifactorial with disordered colonic or rectosigmoid motor function as important pathogenetic factors (1, 2). The rectum plays a crucial role in the production of a normal stool. Distension of the rectal ampulla by a fecal bolus causes the urge to defecate and triggers the defecation reflex which ultimately leads to the evacuation of its content (3, 4).
