Abstract

Almost 15 years have elapsed since the proposal was put forward to administer some corticosteroids in a special way which is called pulse therapy. This consists in administering intravenously single doses of methylprednisolone which are about ten times greater than the highest doses given daily when using traditional methods. After the interesting results in the treatment of renal transplant rejection were reported1–3, corticosteroid pulse therapy was applied in the treatment of patients with lupus nephritis4–10, those with poli-dermatomyositislr11, those with rheumatoid arthritis12,13 and those suffering from ankylosing spondylitis14,15.
