Abstract

Fibre optics is over 30 years old and in its relatively short history has achieved astonishing technological maturity. The techniques which we currently see in the development laboratory and in real applications are, almost without exception, based upon concepts enunciated in the 1960s and 1970s. The suggestion that their could be “advanced” optical fibre optoelectronics implies that equally profound new ideas are currently emerging. This paper speculates on the somewhat unusual uses of fibre optics which are currently in the research laboratories. Whether these will lead to anything so profound as the fibre laser or the idea of zero dispersion is probably doubtful but the area is still buoyant and energetic embracing thoughts ranging from the scanning tunnelling microscope through time reversal systems.
