Abstract
In this paper we study the effects of a cross-wind on a spray jet by considering how fluid jets are deflected and deformed by cross-flows. This analysis shows that the high velocity at which the droplets are expelled by the spray induces a strong vertical air jet throughout which the smallest droplets are dispersed. The amount by which the cross-flow interacts with and bends over this vertical jet and, over a longer distance, deflects the droplets is found to depend largely on the ratio of the cross-wind speed to the induced air speed U 0 /U j .
