Somatic embryogenesis in cacao (Theobroma cacao L.)

  • Chapter
Somatic Embryogenesis in Woody Plants

Part of the book series: Forestry Sciences ((FOSC,volume 44-46))

Abstract

Theobroma cacao L. (cacao) is a major tropical crop, grown for its oil-rich seed, the unique source of cocoa solids and cocoa butter. Cacao is cultivated mainly by small-growers, and represents a significant export commodity for some developing countries. Major centers of cacao production are in West Africa (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon), Brazil, and more recently, Malaysia and Indonesia.
