Abstract

Hybrid clones of almond tree (cv. Garfi) × peach tree (cv. Nemared) were produced to be used as rootstocks for peach trees. In this work several of these hybrid clones were evaluated for their tolerance to iron stress using the susceptible cultivar Nemaguard (N) as a control. Two types of young plants obtained from rooted (softwood or hardwood) cuttings were grown, under controlled conditions, with three types of aerated nutrient solution: 1) with iron, 2) without iron or 3) low in iron and with 10 mM bicarbonate. The degree of tolerance was evaluated with several indexes: 1) the chlorophyll content, 2) the Fe3+ reducing capacity of roots, 3) the whole plant relative growth and 4) the individual shoot growth. All hybrid clones tested were better than the susceptible rootstock in all parameters studied; however, differences appeared among hybrid clones in several indexes. This work shows the possibility of selecting clones with better performance to iron stress in a short time period (between 40 and 50 days).
