Abstract
Ceruloplasmin is a glycoprotein of 150 000 Da capable of reversibly binding up to eight copper atoms per molecule. In its oxidised state the protein acquires a deep blue green colour from the bound copper molecules. Binding up to 95% of the serum copper, ceruloplasmin acts as the prime copper transport protein. It also exhibits enzymatic activity as a ferroxidase, Superoxide dismutase, and an amino oxidase.
