Abstract
Whereas the majority of the nations became involved in the World War, there was a small, but scientifically non-negligible group of neutral states. Some, in fact, had an excellent record of achievements in science. In Europe, the neutral states included the Scandinavian countries — Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden — and Spain, Switzerland, Holland and Vatican State. Among those outside Europe we note Argentina, Chile, Mexico, to mention just a few. As an indication of the relative importance of the neutral countries in the physical sciences let us look at the statistics of Nobel Laureates for physics and chemistry over the years 1901–1915:
