Abstract
Performance appraisals have been around for a long time as a means of assessing an individual’s performance and therefore determining compensation and reward strategies. Most performance appraisal systems have been criticized for their inadequacy in measuring true individual contribution and also in creating situations of unfairness and win-lose practices. They are also perceived as a means for managers to control employees and to bring about the discipline required for increasing productivity levels.
