Abstract
In the preceding chapters fungi have been introduced in a taxonomic framework with a few digressions on matters of biological interest. Many fungi have adopted a saprotrophic mode of nutrition and in this mode they excel as decomposers. Here it is proposed to look at some of the more important aspects of the ecology of saprotrophic fungi.
