Abstract

Calcium antagonists are now a well-established class of drugs in widespread clinical use. They comprise a large variety of chemical structures in which several subclasses have been identified: the dihydropiridines, with nifedipine as the classical reference compound and lacidipine as a drug representing the latest generation of calcium antagonists; the phenylalkylamines, represented by verapamil; the benzothiazepines, with diltiazem, and a small group represented by compounds like bepridil and flunarizine.
