Dynamics of the Solar Corona Observed with the Yohkoh Soft X-Ray Telescope

Abstract

The Yohkoh Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) is providing a new perspective on solar flares and the solar corona in general. Some selected topics from the initial results of the Yohkoh SXT are presented. Continuous soft X-ray observations from the pre-flare through the post-flare phases indicate that magnetic reconnection of a neutral sheet at the top of the flare loop participates in the flare energy release. The full sun X-ray images show many examples of global changes of magnetic field structure (restructuring) and its activation (heating) with time scale of tens of minutes to hours. Frequent microflares are observed in active regions, especially in flare-producing regions. The broadband filter analysis shows that active region plasmas generally have components with temperatures up to 5 MK in addition to the 2 MK component. A thin long coronal hole along the North-South direction shows rigid rotation with the equatorial rotation rate.
