Abstract
The Constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. Such a state is conditioned by a variety of factors ranging from the genetic, the social and the emotional, to the natural and man-made environment. Consequently, consideration of such a state of health will have to take into account factors such as development objectives and strategies, and economic relations (Figure 1) as well as the prevailing social structures, beliefs and value systems in the community.
