Thermodynamically Nonequilibrium Nature of the Ocean/Atmosphere Interface and the Origin of Life

Oceanic and Anthropogenic Controls of Life in the Pacific Ocean

Part of the book series: The GeoJournal Library ((GEJL,volume 21))

Abstract

A hypothesis proposed few years ago by one of the authors of this paper (V.A.T.) it further corroborated. The hypothesis suggests that asymmetric (and nonequilibrium) distribution of cations between biological systems and surrounding milieu could have originated from the non-equilibrium distribution of ions between the bulk phase and thin cold layer on the sea surface. The process of a photocell formation might have included a stage when aerosol droplets usually present near the sea surface spontaneously evolve into sealed vehicles, the droplets having entrapped potassium-enriched sea water from the cold layer on the surface of the “primary broth”.
