Abstract
Platelet reinforcement of ceramics represents a viable alternative to whisker reinforcement. It is evident that the effectivity of platelets as reinforcing elements significantly depends on the composite microstructure. Homogenous platelet dispersion in a matrix sintered to high density is required. Samples made by different processing routes (attrition milling, drying, CIP; ultrasonic dispersion, drying, CIP) have been characterized. Ultrasonic dispersion promotes homogeneous platelet distribution and enhanced densification behaviour but complete densification of a composite with randomly distributed platelets is limited to a platelet content of about 15 vol.%. A method for the preparation of composites with oriented platelets by tape casting and lamination technique is described. Improved densification is achieved with oriented platelets.
