Dominion or Stewardship?: Theological Reflections

  • Chapter
Birth, Suffering, and Death

Part of the book series: Philosophy and Medicine ((CSBE,volume 41))

Abstract

Human puzzlement over the advantages and risks of technology is not new. The ancient Jews lived between the two oldest centers of human civilization, the cities of Egypt and of Mesopotamia. They attributed the discovery of technology to the evil descendants of Cain (Gn 4).1 The building of the Tower of Babel (Gn 11: 1–9), they thought, caused the division of human languages and nations. God through the prophet Samuel warned them of the dire consequences when they asked for a king that they might rival other nations in technological, economic, and military power (1 Sm 8: 1–22; 1 Kgs 12 ff.; McCarter, 1980, 153–162; Jones, 1984, 1, pp. 247–256).
