Cytochrome P-450 catalysed activation of carcinogenic aromatic amines and amides

Abstract

Aromatic amines and amides need to be metabolized in any animal species before they are carcinogenic in that species, because large amounts of compounds are required for tumour induction and tumours appear at sites distant from those of administration (Miller and Miller, 1969, Miller and Miller, 1981). Epidemiological data have demonstrated that aromatic amines such as 2-naphthylamine, 4-aminobiphenyl and benzidine (Fig. 18.1) are responsible for the induction of bladder cancer among industrial workers (Scott, 1962).
