Towards a Modular Theory of Coreference

Logical Structure and Linguistic Structure

Part of the book series: Studies in Linguistics and Philosophy ((SLAP,volume 40))

Abstract

In this paper, I will defend the notion that the theory of coreference involves at least three distinct modules. One component, codified in the binding theory, takes into account configurational relations between elements in the syntactic representation. A second module filters potential pairs of bound elements and their antecedents according to the interpretive properties of the elements themselves. Finally, I will argue that a third component filters pairs of elements according to their thematic relations to predicates.
