Computed tomography of the major salivary glands

  • Chapter
Diagnosis of salivary gland disorders

Abstract

The development of computed tomography (CT) in the early seventies represented a revolution in the diagnosis of soft tissue tumors. In the late seventies and the early eighties, the first results of CT in parotid gland lesions were published (1–4). In these studies a technique consisting of CT after administration of contrast medium into the salivary ductules (CT-sialography) was used. Subsequent reports, however, indicate that with the newer generation of high-resolution CT scanners intraductal contrast is generally not necessary (5, 6). A combination of CT and intravenous contrast infusion has also been advocated (7). In this chapter, the diagnostic value of CT in major salivary gland disease will be discussed.
