Summary

The use of membrane separation processes in a variety of manufacturing and related industries is growing at a significant rate. The problems of fouling are being studied intensely because they are seen as key factors in the overall economics of the process. The effects of membrane type, foulant and cleaning protocol are discussed. The importance in correctly formulating detergent solutions lies in the effectiveness of the product, its approval status and its membrane compatibility. An alternative approach to the problem of fouling is considered, whereby the use of flocculants as a preventative measure is considered. The economics of this approach is discussed.
