Abstract

The change of crystal surface morphology as a result of deformation by twinning and mainly by dislocationinduced slip is shown to reveal a pronounced hierarchy in scales (slip lines to slip band, slip band bundles and deformation bands). The basic dislocation mechanisms of their development and experimental methods for their investigations (optical and electron microscopy, scanning probe techniques) are reviewed. Some typical examples and the limitations of the methods, being restricted to the surrface region, are discussed.
