Major Mental Disorder and Violence in Correctional Settings

Size, Specificity, and Implications for Practice

  • Chapter
Violence among the Mentally III

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((ASID,volume 90))

Abstract

The impact of violence on a prison is not hard to discern: Staff and prisoners are physically injured and may become psychologically disturbed, property is destroyed, regimes and programmes are disrupted and thereby impoverished, violent prisoners are not only incarcerated for longer but held in more expensive conditions (Cooke, 1992a; Goetting & Howsen, 1986; Porporino, 1986). Institutional violence may be contagious, leading to epidemics of violence (Lion, Madden, & Christopher, 1976). The more public forms of violence—rooftop demonstrations, riots, and hostage takings—may undermine public confidence in the criminal justice system in general and the prison system in particular (Porporino). Prison violence is a significant problem.
