Abstract

The Katowice Administrative District (KAD), with its Upper Silesia Industrial Region (USIR), is the oldest and largest industrial region in Poland. The population density is about five times the average for the whole country. Due to deposits of coal and ores of lead and zinc, and power generation, a heavy industry has developed here. As a result, all elements of the environment are of low quality as compared to other parts of Poland. The highest concentrations of both gaseous and non-gaseous pollutants, and the most severe impact to the environment are found in the central part of the KAD, the USIR. This report contains a brief account of the characteristics of the District, and the results of recent investigations and measurement programs of the status of the environment. Reviewed here are reports on biomarkers used for identification of pollutants, and their impact on the environment.
