Abstract
In the generative literature, it has generally been assumed that aspectual verbs like begin show mixed behaviour with respect to the distinction established between raising and control predicates. Although these verbs clearly behave as raising predicates, as shown by the paradigm sentences in (1) first pointed out by Perlmutter (1970), the fact that they can also occur in simple transitive structures, as shown in (2), has led many syntacticians to posit the existence of two subcategorization frames for these verbs.1
