The Muenster Redshift Project (MRSP)

Abstract

The Muenster Redshift Project is a wide-field survey, where large num–bers of low-dispersion spectra are analyzed for cosmological investigations (MRSP; see Duerbeck et al. 1989, Seitter 1992). The project differs in sev–eral aspects from traditional surveys because the redshifts z are estimated with (1σ) errors of 10 percent at the maximum redshift z = 0.3. Conceptu–ally, the MRSP shares common properties both with two and with three-dimensional surveys: With the MRSP survey strategy, many objects can be studied within large volumes in comparatively short times - this is the ma–jor aspect of two-dimensional surveys. Several thousand reference objects are used for accurate wavelength, magnitude, and redshift calibrations so that the large number of observed survey galaxies permits (via deconvo–lution) very precise determinations of cosmological quantities - this shows that on large scales the MRSP corresponds to a three-dimensional survey.
