Abstract

Current theory and observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are reviewed. After sketching the theoretical framework in which current observations are interpreted, the recent rapid observational progress on anisotropies of the microwave background is described, together with the improvements that can be expected in the near future. This data is then used to set some preliminary constraints on the values of the fundamental cosmological parameters Ω and H 0. In addition, secondary anisotropies due to the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect are described. Some results on defect anisotropies are also discussed.
