Abstract
The agricultural sector in the Netherlands occupies about 2 million ha, which means that half of the total territory of the country (about 4 million ha) is dedicated to agriculture. It involves 110 000 farms, which employ 286 000 people. Most of these farms are small family enterprises: the average size of general cropping farms is about 30 ha, of dairy farms 20 ha, while horticultural farms are generally no bigger than 1 ha. Granivore farms, mostly pig or poultry rearing operations, generally also cover a small area, even though their operations may be very intensive (de Cooman et al., 1995).
