Abstract

Ecophysiological studies of cyanobacteria isolated from three distinctly different types of paddy soils in Bangladesh were carried out. Paddy soils selected for the study were calcareous soils, saline soils and red soils. Physicochemical properties of soils had marked influences on the indigenous blue-green algal population. Wide variations in growth rate, ability to grow under heterotrophic conditions, nitrogen-fixing capacity under different conditions and tolerance to pesticides among the isolates of a genus and between different genera were observed. Heterotrophically grown cultures were more tolerant to pesticides compared to autotrophically grown cultures. Furthermore, the nitrogen fixation in heterotrophically grown cultures was 6–8 times higher than that in autotrophically grown cultures. Cyanobacteria isolated from saline soils had the capacity to reduce the electrical conductivity (salinity) measured at 4–20 ds/m. The reduction of electrical conductivity by the isolates ranged from 6% to 42.5% in liquid cultures and from 9.94% to 26.53% in soils.
