Abstract

Although A. tumefaciens and R. meliloti are closely related, the interactions of these bacteria with cells of non-leguminous dicots differ markedly. When R. meliloti was added to carrot suspension culture cells less than 2% of the added bacteria bound to the plant cells. The addition of the nod gene inducer luteolin had no effect on the binding of the bacteria to carrot cells. When A. tumefaciens was mixed with the same cells more than 30% of the added bacteria bound to the carrot cells. A. tumefaciens, but not R. meliloti, bound to root segments of A. thaliana. Both species of bacteria bound to alfalfa roots.
