Abstract
Mastigophorans, or flagellated protozoa (the ‘whip-bearers’), probably show a wider range of feeding and nutritional types than any other group of protozoa. Taxonomically they are included with the Opalinata and the Sarcodina in one phylum Sarcomastigophora, containing organisms which have a single type of nucleus and which have locomotor organelles, pseudopodia or flagella, or both. Sexual reproduction, if it occurs, involves the production of gametes and conventional gametic fusion. This set of criteria indicates a phyletic relationship, but other criteria easily separate the Mastigophora, Opalinata and Sarcodina into distinct subphyla.
